Athletic Bilbao struggled once again against a side theoretically much weaker than them, but in the end they just did enough to qualify for the league stage of the competition. With a narrow 3-2 lead from the first leg, Caparrós's side needed at least a draw. But although they had a couple of half-chances, the Norwegian side could have been ahead at the break had efforts from Moldskred and Lindpere found the target.

A few minutes after the restart though Athletic were awarded a penalty when Koppinen blocked a De Marcos shot with his arm, and Javi Martínez stepped up to convert his second spot kick of the tie. The lead only lasted six minutes however before ex Racing striker Rushfeldt headed the equaliser from Moldskred's cross. One more goal would have seen Tromso through, and there were some nervous moments before the final whistle blew.
