Post Script. Benni has stayed at Celta, but will have difficult competition next season with Turdó leaving and Catanha joining the squad in his place. At least he started well, scoring six goals in the summer Intertoto cup tournament, making him Spain's top scorer to date. He now goes on to play for his country in the Olympic games.

02.04. Scored Celta's goal in their 1-1 draw against Valladolid. Turdó was back on the bench having recovered from his injury, so will have competition for his place again.

12.03. Scored two goals in the UEFA cup midweek against Juventus, both gifted by the Italian defence. Started the match against Espanyol.

05.03. Scored his fifth league goal of the season with an impressive header against Racing. Was replaced by Hoogendorp late in the second half.

27.02. Returned to the side after international duty and scored a good goal against Zaragoza.

13.02. Has been called up to play for South Africa in the pre-Olympic tournament and misses the next two matches.

06.02. Played on Tuesday in the cup and on Sunday in the league, but Celta failed to score in both matches.

30.01. Played 90 minutes against Atlético with Turdó out through injury, but didn't have a shot at goal.

23.01. The signing of Dutch striker Hoogendorp gives Benni a new competitor for the striker position. In the match against Sevilla, McCarthy came on eight minutes from time and scored the winning goal with his first kick of the match.

09.01. Still playing half matches, but not scoring and Celta looking for a replacement for him and/or Turdó.

07.11. Substituted by Turdó in the UEFA cup match on Thursday, Turdó scored and kept his place in the team for the Sunday league game. He scored two more, and Benni stayed on the substitutes bench throughout the match. Will be difficult for him to get his place back at the moment.

31.10. Still holding first team spot although hasn't scored for some time.

17.10. Still has to strike lucky in the league and has only scored once in seven games. Played the whole game against Racing.

2.10. Criticised earlier in the week as only scored one so far in the league, but a hat-trick mid-week in the UEFA cup against Lausanne put him back in favour.

19.9. Missed the match against Rayo as was on international duty.

16.9. Played UEFA cup against Lausanne. Brought down for penalty in second half.

12.9. First choice striker against Atlético de Madrid but didn't score this time.

30.8. Scored his first league goal in day 2 against Sevilla.

20.8. Benni has started well and has scored four goals in pre-season matches making him the club's top scorer. His best performance was against Italian club Parma in the Hispalis Trophy where he scored both goals. He joins one of the most exciting teams in the league and is expected to do big things.
