30.06.03. Not the end of season he expected, although he did end up top scorer in the cup with eight goals and got fourteen in all competitions. The surprise change of manager could be to his advantage though, and having been linked with a possible move under Del Bosque's regime, Queiroz has now told Valdano that he would like him to stay on and has asked for his contract to be revised upwards.

22.06.03. Another disappointment in the last match as he didn't get on against Athletic Bilbao, although the fact that Madrid won the league title was a consolation.

15.06.03. Didn't get on in the local derby at Atlético Madrid.

01.06.03. More disappointment for the youngster, and he was left out of the Spanish under 21 squad for the games against Greece and Northern Ireland. Didn't get a game either in the home draw with Celta.

25.05.03. Once again was passed up for Real Madrid's game at Valencia, Morientes the man chosen to substitute Ronaldo near the end of the game.

18.05.03. On the bench for the second leg match with Juventus, but didn't get on even though Madrid were losing. Didn't play either in the 5-1 win over Málaga at the weekend.

11.05.03. Came on for the injured Ronaldo five minutes in to the second half of the Champions League semi-final with Juventus. Complained to the press that he was not getting enough time on the field of play, and Del Bosque punished him by leaving him out of the weekend starting line up at Recreativo despite injuries to Raúl and Ronaldo. Morientes and Tote started up front, but Portillo did at least get on for the last 15 minutes without altering the 0-0 scoreline.

04.05.03. With Reyes and Fernando Torres injured, started the game for Spain's under 21 side against Australia under 23s. Didn't feature much this time though, and was one of many players replaced at half time as the manager tried out new faces. Played the last 12 minutes in the 1-5 defeat against Mallorca, and complained afterwards that he was not being given many chances to play this season. His agent says he has received several offers for him.

27.04.03. Got a run out for the last twenty minutes at Old Trafford with his side ahead against Manchester United in the Champions League game. The English team won 4-3 on the night in the end, but Madrid go through to the semi-finals. Didn't get a game at the weekend in Sevilla, Del Bosque preferring Morientes to substitute Ronaldo late on. Called up for Spain's under 21 side again.

20.04.03. Non playing substitute in the league match against Barcelona.

13.04.03. Non playing substitute against Manchester United. Came on for last twenty minutes at Real Sociedad and scored his side's second, although it didn't count for much as they lost the game 4-2.

06.04.03. Played in place of the suspended Fernando Torres against Armenia's under 21 side and scored two goals, the first from the penalty spot. Spain ran out 5-0 winners. Came on in the second half of the league game against Rayo, heading the goal which put his side in front in the 90th minute. Madrid won 3-1 in the end.

30.03.03. Didn't get on the pitch for the under 21 game in the Ukraine, with injuries to defenders meaning that all substitutions were used up.

23.03.03. Has been called up for the under 21 international double header against Ukraine and Armenia. Non-playing substitute, both for the Champions League game at Lokomotiv Moscow and in the league against Deportivo.

16.03.03. Late substitute for Raúl in the Champions League victory over AC Milan, mainly to eat up time. Came on for the last five minutes at Villarreal, and was present when Helguera scored the only goal of the game in the last minute.

09.03.03. Played the second half of the home match against Racing Santander, replacing Ronaldo at the break. Scored the team's third goal after Raúl set him up.

02.03.03. Came on as a last gasp substitute for Pavón in the ninetieth minute of the Champions League game at Borussia Dortmund, and scored a vital equaliser from Zidane's pass. Non-playing substitute at Alavés.

23.02.03. Non-playing substitute for the European game against Borussia Dortmund, which Madrid won 2-1. Came on for last two minutes against Valladolid in place of Ronaldo, and almost immediately scored his side's third goal.

16.02.03. Had a run out for the under 21 side against Germany, replacing Fernando Torres midway through the second half. Non-playing substitute in the league match at Osasuna.

09.02.03. Called up for Spain's under 21 friendly international against Germany. Was on the bench again for the game against Betis, but didn't get on the park.

02.02.03. Non playing substitute at the weekend against Espanyol.

26.01.03. As usual, was in the starting line up for the cup quarter final first leg at home to Mallorca. Scored Madrid's goal with a far post header from Bravo's cross, but in the end his side were held too a 1-1 draw. His goal though was his eighth in the cup, making him the competition's top scorer. Substitute again at the weekend in Bilbao, but Del Bosque stuck to his starting line up throughout.

19.01.03. Got the third of Madrid's four goals in the second leg cup tie against Terrassa. Made it in to the squad for the derby match against Atlético, but didn't get a game.

12.01.03. Another goal for the young striker in the cup, this time from the penalty spot against Terrassa. It was his sixth of the competition, making him the Copa del Rey's top scorer. Didn't get a game at the weekend when his side visited Celta.

05.01.03. An injury to Morientes meant he was drafted in to the squad at the last minute against Valencia, and he took advantage to score the best goal of the match two minutes after coming on as a late substitute for Raúl, running on to Zidane's pass to shoot past Palop.

22.12. Got a run out in the second half of the centenary match against an all star XI, and won a penalty which started the fight back. Not even on the bench though for the last match of the year at Málaga. Despite his lack of opportunities, all reports are that he will stay to the end of the season.

15.12. Didn't get into the squad for the Champions League game against Lokomotiv Moscow. Non playing substitute at the weekend against Recreativo.

08.12. Not included in the squad for the Intercontinental cup in Tokyo, nor for the league match at Mallorca at the weekend.

01.12. With Ronaldo still suffering from flu, came on half an hour from the end for a disappointing Morientes in the Champions League defeat at AC Milan. No match at the weekend as the squad went off to Japan for the intercontinental cup. The club has apparently been approached by Reggina in the Italian first division, who have asked if he would be available on loan when the transfer window opens in January. Madrid have no objections as they feel he needs more experience, although they would prefer a stronger club.

24.11. Picked for Spain's under 21 friendly against Bulgaria, and with Torres and Reyes being rested, he started at centre forward. Scored twice in the first half before being substituted at the break as the managers tried out other players. Did not get a game though in the big match at Barcelona.

17.11. Didn't play either in the Champions League game at Genk or in the league against Real Sociedad.

10.11. Was finally given a run out in the cup at Oviedo, and in almost a carbon copy of the first round, he and Tote scored two goals each. The first came from Solari's cross to open the scoring, and the second after Miñambres laid the ball back near the end. Both he and Tote have now scored five times, all in the cup. Didn't get a game though at Rayo at the weekend.

03.11. Didn't get a game again this week, with two important matches against Roma in Europe and Deportivo in the league.

27.10. Non playing substitute in the 2-2 Champions League draw against AEK Athens, and again at the weekend against Villarreal.

20.10. Came on for the last half hour in the Spain's under 21 friendly against Slovenia midweek, and to his great relief got his first international goal within five minutes. Lost his place to Ronaldo (logically) at the weekend in the league match at Racing, but did get a brief 20 minute run out in place of Zidane as Madrid tried to recover a two goal deficit.

13.10. Non playing substitute in the second half of the suspended game at Betis, which was played midweek. Called up for Spain's under 21 match against Northern Ireland, and with Reyes injured, started alongside Fernando Torres in attack. However had a bad game, even getting in the way of a shot by Xabi Alonso which was going in, and was substituted by Aganzo a quarter of an hour from the end.

06.10. Came on for Zidane for the last seven minutes of the Champions League game at AEK Athens together with Morientes as Madrid tried for the winner. With Raúl and Morientes injured, was given a start against Alavés, sharing the attack with Guti. Missed a sitter though and was taken off after an hour to make room for Ronaldo, who subsequently scored twice on his debut.

29.09. Came on as substitute for the last quarter of an hour of the Champions League game against Genk with the score already 6-0. Had a couple of chances, but didn't score. Substitute again at Valladolid, but didn't play.

22.09. On the bench for the opening Champions League game at Roma, but didn't get on the pitch. Non-playing substitute again at the weekend against Osasuna.

15.09. Was given a run out in the cup alongside Tote, playing against San Sebastian de los Reyes (a team he played against for Real Madrid C last season). Took his chances well, and completed a hat-trick near the end, as did Tote. Non-playing substitute for the league game at Betis, which was suspended at half time due to floodlight failure.

08.09. Called up again for Spain's under-21 European qualifying game against Greece. came on early in the second half for Julio Alvarez with Spain losing, but had a disappointing game.

01.09. The signing of Ronaldo could mean he plays less, but is still in Real Madrid's first team squad. A late call up for Spain's under-21 side against Hungary, he came on at half time in place of Reyes. Also got a run out in the European Super Cup match against Feyenoord, playing the last 20 minutes in place of Guti. On the bench for the opening league game against Espanyol, but didn't get on the pitch.

A product of the Real Madrid junior teams, Portillo started last season in the squad of Real Madrid C. However after scoring over 20 goals in the first half of the year he was promoted to the B side, and was finally given a chance with the first team late in the season. He made his first appearance in the Champions League game at Panathinaikos, coming on as substitute and scoring a spectacular goal. His meteoric rise earned him a place in Spain's under-21 side, and Del Bosque is expected to include him in his first team squad as understudy to Morientes this season.
