12.05. Scored the equalising goal at Zaragoza to ensure a Champions League spot for his side. Ended his first season with 21 goals (17 in the league and 4 in Europe) and it could have been more if Rexach had played him in away games at the start of the season. A successful first year. Just missed out though on a call up to Argentina's World cup squad, much to the disgust of many commentators.

05.05. With Rivaldo injured, he is now an ever-present in Rexach's line ups. Had a hand in the equalising goal in the Champions League semi-final return leg at Real Madrid, and played the full match as well at home to Espanyol in the league.

28.04. Played the whole of the disastrous Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid, which Barça lost 0-2, and then another 90 minutes in the league on Saturday against Villarreal. Set up Luis Enrique for the equaliser and scored the fourth goal himself.

21.04. Called up by Bielsa for Argentina's friendly at Germany in place of the injured Batistuta, getting a run out for the last quarter of an hour in place of Celta's Gustavo López. Played the first hour in the league at Celta, but was replaced when Barça fell two behind.

14.04. Needing a win, Rexach brought him in to an attacking line up against Panathinaikos. Made the first goal for Luis Enrique and then scored the winner in the second half which took Barça through to a semi-final tie with Real Madrid. Two goals again in the league against Alavés, making it five now in eight days.

07.04. Non-playing substitute in the Champions League game at Panathinaikos, as Rexach put out a defensive line up. Got a rare start away from home at Bilbao in the weekend league match, with Kluivert suspended. Took advantage to score twice, the first from a header, the second with a run down the right as Barça won to move up to fourth.

31.03. Called up for Argentina midweek, but didn't get on the pitch in the end. Played the full match at home to Las Palmas. Had a lively game, but his side only drew 1-1.

24.03. Rexach went for experience in the final Champions League group game at Galatasaray, leaving Saviola and also Motta on the bench. On Saturday his first Barça - Real Madrid derby, and once again he played the full match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

17.03. Had a lively game in the Champions League against Liverpool, but couldn't score and ended drawing 0-0. Rexach upset the crowd taking him off three minutes from the end to put on Geovanni.

10.03. After last week's success Rexach put out his trident for the away visit to Betis. This time it didn't come off though, and Barça lost after Rivaldo limped off with an injury. Saviola played the full 90 minutes.

03.03. Non playing substitute for the return match at Roma, and didn't come on even though Barça lost 3-0. Came back in at the weekend for the home game against Málaga which his side won 5-1. Scored the second goal, won two penalties which Kluivert converted and had a hand in the last goal, combining with the other members of the 'trident', Rivaldo and Kluivert.

24.02. Disappointing performance against Roma in the Champions League match in the Nou Camp, being replaced by Overmars ten minutes in to the second half. Left on the bench for the game at Valencia even though Rivaldo was out injured. Came on for the last half hour, but did not feature much. Rexach appears to have decided he will start at home but not away. Nobody really knows why.

17.02. Only played the last quarter of an hour for Argentina against Wales, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Returned to Barcelona for the important game against Deportivo, scoring the equalising goal after great skill by Rivaldo and finally being replaced by Reiziger in the last minute to waste time.

10.02. Left on the bench for the first time in a home league match, but came on just after half time to inspire Barça to a 2-0 win, scoring the second goal. Called up for the full Argentina side to play Wales next week. Started as sub again at Mallorca, coming on early in the second half but just failing to score his first away goal of the season.

03.02.Left on the bench for the game at Tenerife as Rexach tried out a revolutionary 5-3-2 line up. Came on with his team winning 0-4, and set up Kluivert's fourth goal. Barça won 0-6 in the end.

27.01. Played the full 90 minutes in the disastrous match against Osasuna. Had a couple of nice touches, but otherwise did very little.

20.01. Had a very quiet game in the defeat at Rayo Vallecano, being substituted by Geovanni ten minutes from the end.

13.01. Had a quiet game against Sevilla, but Barça won 3-1 in the end with two from Rivaldo.

06.01. Now a fully established member of Rexach's first choice squad, and played the full game against Zaragoza. Scored the second goal after Kluivert set him up.

23.12. With Rivaldo once again not fit, started up front alongside Kluivert in the local derby at Espanyol. Didn't feature much at all though.

16.12. Started the game at Villarreal in a new 4-4-2 line up, but was sacrificed just after half time to protect the one goal lead after Xavi got sent off, being replaced by Gerard.

09.12. After recent disappointing results Rexach put out his trident of Saviola, Rivaldo and Kluivert in the Champions League match against Galatasaray. Barça fell two behind in the first half, but Saviola scored two well taken goals in the second half to salvage a point. His good form won him a place in the league game against Celta. Scored the second goal in a 2-2 draw, although appeared to control the ball with his arm in doing so.

02.12. Left out again at the weekend as Rivaldo returned from his cold. Came on for the last half hour with his side two goals down, but made no impression.

25.11. On the bench for the Champions League game at Liverpool, and with Barça winning 1-3 he was not called upon. With Rivaldo suffering from a cold, he started the league match at Las Palmas, but was replaced by Gerard for the last five minutes as Rexach settled for a 0-0 draw.

18.11. With Rivaldo rested after a long trip, Saviola played the full 90 minutes in the game at Las Palmas. However he was marked out of the match and contributed little as his team drew 0-0.

11.11. Started the match in the embarrassing cup defeat at the hands of second division B side Figueres, and was critical in the press of Rexach's comments afterwards that they had made a ridicule of themselves. Made up for it at the weekend though with two goals against Valladolid. Barça won 4-0, and Saviola also won a penalty which Kluivert converted.

04.11. Played the first 75 minutes in the Champions League game against Fenerbahçe, being substituted by Dani near the end. Left out of the starting line up though for the big game at Real Madrid, coming on for the last quarter of an hour with the team two behind.

28.10. Left on the bench for the Champions League game against Olympique Lyon. Came back into the side for the home game against Betis, scoring the first after Kluivert set him up and making two for Rivaldo in the second half.

21.10. Started both the Champions league game on Wednesday against Bayer Leverkusen and the Spanish league game at Málaga, forming the so-called 'trident' with Rivaldo and Kluivert. Was substituted halfway through the second half in both games by Geovanni. Set up first goal for Kluivert against the Germans.

14.10. Came on at half time in the rescheduled Champions League game against Lyon, replacing Geovanni. Did not feature much, but the team won 2-0 to move up to second in their group. With Rivaldo pulling out, he started the home game against Valencia, scoring a well taken goal from Coco's cross to level the scores in the first half.

07.10. Started the match against Mallorca and scored the third goal on the half hour mark, turning Geovanni's cross past the keeper. Picked up an injury and refused to play with pain-killing injections, so left in Barcelona for the game at Deportivo.

30.09. Came on as late substitute both in the defeat in the Champions League at Bayer Leverkusen and in the league at Real Sociedad.

23.09. On the bench for the game at Osasuna, coming on for Kluivert halfway through the second half. Substitute as well in the Champions League game in Turkey against Fenerbahçe, coming on for Geovanni and scoring his first official goal for his new club. Started the game against Tenerife and played the full 90 minutes, scoring Barça's second in the last minute with a brilliant solo run.

15.09. Came to Barcelona in a blaze of glory after ending up top scorer in the under 20 World Cup competition, although saddened by the death of his father due to illness shortly afterwards. Already named best player in Barcelona's pre-season Gamper trophy after scoring. Came on as second half substitute in the first league game at Sevilla, and started in the draw against Rayo, being replaced by Alfonso near the end.
