As usual there will be an intensive programme of pre-season matches, starting after the 2016/17 campaign ends and going on to the end of August, when the league season begins again this year (see below for more). We set out below the most important games involving La Liga clubs, and will be publishing regular updates when more information is known. NB. Europa League play-off rounds
Three Spanish teams are taking part in the Europa League this season, fifth placed Villarreal and sixth placed Real Sociedad, who qualify directly for the league stage, and seventh placed Athletic Bilbao, who come in to the competition at the third qualifying stage. Their opponents were Dinamo Bucharest, with the first leg in Romania on 27/07, and the return at San Mamés on 03/08. After winning that, they met Panathinaikos in the play-off round. 8 Aug European Super Cup
The European Supercup took place once again in the second week of August, this time in Skopje, Macedonia. Champions League winners Real Madrid beat José Mourinho's Manchester United to take their 2nd title in a row. See sparate section for more.

29 Aug Colombino trophy, Huelva
With Recreativo (the oldest club in the league) struggling for survival in the regional second division B, the 53rd edition of this prestigious trophy was delayed until the last week of August. Recreativo beat Getafe 1-0, Ale Zambrano scoring the only goal for the Andalusians.
