First Division - Day Five

Deportivo de La Coruña were surprised by newly promoted Numancia, who won comfortably by 0-2. Deportivo had previously been undefeated, and took the game too lightly, with one eye on next Thursday's UEFA cup match against Stabaek. Irureta decided not to bring Brazilian international Flavio back in to the squad as he did not think that he had fully recovered from an injury, and left Turu Flores on the bench, with Schurrer coming in for Naybet in the middle of defence. Numancia lined up with a 5-4-1 formation, with only Barbu up front. Numancia, playing for the first time ever against Depor, took the lead three minutes from half time through Gabi Popescu after good work by Pacheta. Deportivo's claims that the Rumanian midfielder was offside were waved aside by referee Diaz Vega. Irureta brought on Turu to try to turn the side, but Numancia scored again five minutes from time through Morales, again in a possible offside position. Depor drop to seventh and Numancia join the group of five teams on seven points.

Valencia finally registered their first point of the season, but given that it was 0-0 at home against a Valladolid side playing with 10 men from the 26th minute (after the sending off of Turiel for two yellow cards) it was nothing to write home about. Palop played his first full match in goal for the home side after the serious knee injury to Cañizares, and Farinós was back in midfield. Valladolid left Congo on the bench and were still without the suspended Caminero. Piojo López has been reported to have signed a five year agreement with Lazio as from January, and maybe he was thinking about this as he disappeared alarmingly from the game. Chances fell to several players, including Farinós, Piojo and Oscar for Valencia and Rodrigo, Vizcaino and Victor for Valladolid, but nobody was capable of finding the net. Valencia manager Hector Cúper was whistled at and the crowd waved white handkerchiefs (A sign of protest in this case) when he brought on another defender Fagiani 15 minutes from time and left Rumanian striker Adrian Ilie sitting on the bench. Valencia are bottom, with Valladolid staying mid-table on 7 points.
