First Division - Day Six

Betis themselves climbed up to fourteenth place with another 1-0 victory, this time against Oviedo. The Asturias side's manager, Luis Aragonés was booed as he walked on to the Betis pitch for the first time since leaving the club a year ago after clashing with controversial president Ruiz de Lopera. Oviedo have not won in Betis for 57 years, and they will have to wait at least another year after putting in a disappointing performance (incidentally, both managers were alive the last time Oviedo won in 1942/3 - Luis Aragonés is 61 and Carlos Griguol is 63). With Claessens injured, Luis kept the same team who won last week at Alavés, keeping Losada up front alongside Dely Valdés and leaving Nadj on the bench. Betis were without Luis Fernández, suspended after being sent off last week. The only goal of the game came in the 32nd minute from Finidi, who picked up a long ball from Alexis and half mis-hit a shot past Esteban. Betis defender Filipescu was sent off in the second half for a second bookable offence, and will miss the local derby with Sevilla in 10 days time. Betis have now picked up seven points from six games, despite the fact that they have only scored three goals all season. Oviedo are one point behind them on six points.

Two old acquaintances Numancia and Málaga met in Soria, and shared the points with a 1-1 draw. Both teams were promoted directly last season, and despite the distance between their respective towns their supporters are old friends. They even organised a party for the Málaga supporters who made the 800 Km journey to Soria, complete with Paella and music, and a commemorative shirt, with one side in each team's colours, was produced for the occasion. Numancia manager Andoni Goekoetxea included Eléder for the injured Jaume, and Peiró brought in ex Real Madrid forward Edgar up front for Darío Silva, also injured. Málaga started off on top, with ex Numancia player Movilla hitting the post early on, and the away side took the lead close to half time when Edgar headed in after Rufete's shot rebounded off Muñiz. Goekoetxea brought on Morales, Ojeda and Castaño in the second half, and it was Morales who eventually broke through the Málaga defence ten minutes from time after a series of shots. Both teams now have eight points, and are for the moment comfortably situated in mid-table.
