International Matches

Spain played two friendly fixtures last week in preparation for the Euro 2000 competition.

Spain 0 - Brazil 0

Camacho's team took on the four times world champions Brazil in Vigo on Saturday night and held them to a score-less draw. Spain were the better side in the first half, and hit the woodwork twice in the opening twenty minutes through Morientes and Raúl. Teams were as follows:

Spain: Molina, Michel Salgado, Abelardo, Paco, Sergi, Guardiola, Valerón (Engonga - min 68), Luis Enrique (Mendieta - min 82), Etxeberria (Munitis - min 68), Raúl (Alfonso - min 86), Morientes (Urzaiz - min 68).

Brazil: Marcos, Cafu, Antonio Carlos, Aldair, Roberto Carlos, Emerson, Marcos Assunçao, Ze Roberto (Giovanni - min 70), Rivaldo (Ze Elias - min 90), Elber, Anderson (Jardel - min 66).

Spain 0 - Argentina 2

Camacho's thirteenth match in charge proved unlucky, his side recording their first defeat since the ex Real Madrid defender took over as manager. At least if you are going to lose it is better to do so in a friendly, and their run of two matches without scoring after a record breaking campaign in the Euro 2000 qualifiers has probably come at the right time. The goals were scored by two players who earn their living in the Spanish league, Kily González and Pochettino (who also has dual Spanish and Argentinian nationality). Valencia's midfielder Kily didn't know much about his first goal, Ferrer's clearance rebounding off his foot and past a surprised Molina in the 62nd minute. Espanyol's defender Pochettino sank Spain's hopes of a comeback, following up from close range after Molina had stopped his earlier header from a corner. More worrying than the result was the injury list after the game. Alfonso will be out for some time with a shoulder injury, and Abelardo and Urzaiz both miss this weekend's league games. Teams were as follows:

Spain: Molina, Ferrer, Nadal, Paco, Aranzábal, Guardiola, Mendieta (Morientes - min 73), Luis Enrique (Etxeberria - min 46), Guerrero (Valerón - min 67), Raúl (Munitis - min 46), Alfonso (Urzaiz - min 22).

Argentina: Burgos, Ayala, Vivas, Pochettino, Zanetti, Sensini, Simeone, Kily González, Claudio López (Gustavo López - min 76), Hernán Crespo (Berizzo - min 91), Ortega (Solari - min 86).
