First Division - Day Fifteen

Alavés 2 - Betis 0

Alavés: Herrera; Contra, Karmona, Beruet, Torres Mestre; Morales, Desío, Nan Ribera, Pablo; Javi Moreno, Kodro. 4-4-2.
Betis: Prats; Crosa, Karhan, Filipescu, Luis Fernández; Benjamín, Merino, Ito, Romero; Finidi, Alfonso. 4-4-2.

Alavés moved up to their highest ever position in the first division, taking fifth place after their second win in a week. Suspensions to Téllez for the home side and Denilson and Rivas for the visitors meant that Beruet, Luis Fernández and Romero returned to their respective sides, with Nan Ribera coming in for the injured Astudillo for Alavés. Veteran striker Meho Kodro opened the scoring in the 21st minute after he knocked in Javi Moreno's cross from close range, and Moreno himself added the second from the penalty spot just before the break after Nan Ribera had been fouled by Karhan.

Mallorca 1 - Oviedo 1

Mallorca: Leo Franco; Olaizola, Nadal, Siviero, Miguel Soler; Lauren, Engonga, Chichi Soler, Carreras; Biagini, Tristán. 4-4-2
Oviedo: Esteban; Keita, Onopko, Boris; Danjou, Paulo Bento, Rabarivony; Pompei, Losada, Juan González; Dely Valdés. 3-3-3-1

Another 1-1 draw as Mallorca manager Fernando Vázquez faced up to the team which fired him at the end of last season. With Stankovic still out injured, Mallorca named an unchanged side, with Carreras keeping his place in midfield. Oviedo lined up with a new formation, with Dubovsky and Iván Iglesias dropping out of the starting lineup, Juan González and Rabarivony coming in for them. The visitors took the lead on the hour mark, Dely Valdés getting his first goal for some time after Leo Franco had pushed out Pompei's shot. Once again the saviour of Mallorca was Diego Tristán, this time the on form striker directing a header over Esteban from a pass from Ibagaza five minutes after Dely's goal. Mallorca drop out of the UEFA positions into seventh place, and Oviedo stay next to bottom.

Espanyol 1 - Valladolid 1

Espanyol: Cavallero; Cristóbal, Lopo, Nando, Navas; Velamazán, Galca, Roger, Arteaga; Benítez, Tamudo. 4-4-2.
Valladolid: César; Torres Gómez, Santamaría, García Calvo, Peña, Marcos; Vizcaino, Turiel, Lozano; Víctor, Rodrigo. 5-3-2.

Espanyol threw away a victory with virtually the last kick of the match after Rodrigo sneaked past the defence to pick up Alberto's clever back heel and beat Cavallero in the 93rd minute. The Catalans had taken the lead just before half time from the penalty spot, Galca scoring his third goal in two games after Roger had been brought down by Víctor. However they were reduced to ten men near the end when Navas was sent off for a second bookable offence. Espanyol have now gone over two months without a victory at their Montjuic stadium, and have yet to win in their striking new blue and white check colours, an outfit introduced to celebrate their centenary year. Valladolid have now gone three matches since their last defeat, but stay in 18th place level on points with Málaga. Nando came into the home side starting line up for the first time in six months, replacing the injured Pochettino, and Tamudo returned in attack. Caminero came on in the second half for Valladolid, his first appearance after another long injury.
