International Matches

Camacho announced his latest squad for next Wednesday's friendly with Italy in Barcelona's Montjuic Olympic stadium. This will be the last game before the end of the season, and Camacho told local press that he expects around 90% of this group to form his Euro 2000 squad. In all there were seven changes, with two new caps, Juanfran and Rufete, being named. Juanfran, who fractured his skull earlier in the season in a freak accident, is a controversial choice in view of his bad disciplinary record, and it remains to be seen whether he has the composure at international level to hold down a place. Rufete is the surprise of the group. He is another of those players who couldn't make it with a big club, and decided to seek his fortune in a more modest side. After rising through the ranks at Barcelona, he played for a season at Toledo before joining Málaga two seasons ago. He has been instrumental in Málaga's promotion to the first division last year and their good season so far. Guardiola and Raúl return after missing a match through injury, and Cañizares and Alfonso are recalled after long periods out. With Hierro missing through injury, his team-mate Iván Helguera gets an unexpected recall in defence. Luis Enrique and Mendieta are also injured, and the Barcelona midfielder will probably not be fit in time for the finals in the summer. Juanmi, Romero, Salva and Víctor are the other players left out this time, but all should be in the running for places in the final squad, as should Sergi and Morientes, both recovering from injury at the moment. Other possible names include Salgado, Guerrero, Ferrer, Luis Cembranos and a host of others. The full squad is as follows:

Keepers: Molina (Atlético de Madrid), Cañizares (Valencia)

Defenders: Abelardo (Barcelona), Velasco and Juanfran (Celta), Aranzábal (Real Sociedad), Iván Helguera (Real Madrid), Paco (Zaragoza)

Midfield: Valerón (Atlético de Madrid), Guardiola (Barcelona), Fran (Deportivo), Rufete (Málaga), Engonga (Mallorca)

Forwards: Etxeberria and Urzaiz (Athletic Bilbao), Alfonso (Betis), Munitis (Racing), Raúl (Real Madrid).

Camacho also threw a lifeline to Deportivo's central defender César, struggling to get back in his side after injury, by naming him in the under 21 squad. The full list is as follows:

Keepers: Aranzubia (Athletic Bilbao), Casillas (Real Madrid)

Defenders: Lacruz (Athletic Bilbao), Capdevila (Atlético Madrid), Puyol (Barcelona), Sergio (Celta), César (Deportivo), Marchena (Sevilla)

Midfield: Xavi (Barcelona), Toni Velamazán (Espanyol), Orbaiz (Osasuna), Ismael (Racing), Angulo and Gerard (Valencia)

Forwards: Gabri (Barcelona), Tamudo (Espanyol), José Mari (AC Milan), Farinós (Valencia).
