Second Division A - Day Thirty Eight

Las Palmas moved closer to returning to the first division with a 2-0 victory over Getafe. Jarni got a goal in each half as his team opened up a four point gap at the top. Second played fourth and third played fifth in the division's other key matches, with the lower ranked teams taking the honours in both cases. Osasuna beat Villarreal by 3-1 with goals in the first half from Palacios and Angel, with Iván Rosado adding a third in the second half. Calleja replied for Villarreal. Salamanca's revival continued, with on loan striker Bonilla getting his second in two matches after Quique Martín had opened the scoring. Manuel pulled one back near the end for Extremadura. The results left the four of them within two points of each other, with Villarreal on 61 points, Osasuna and Extremadura on 60 and Salamanca on 59. Pick any two from four for the two other promotion spots. All of the chasing pack lost ground, with Lleida only drawing 2-2 at home to Albacete (they now have 56 points), Sporting losing 1-0 to Mérida, (who draw level with them) and Levante losing 2-0 to Leganés. The league's top scorer Salillas had a nightmare for Levante, missing a penalty and then getting sent off. Córdoba drew 1-1 with Elche, and Tenerife slipped further behind after losing 2-1 to Atlético Madrid B. Despite their victory Atlético B will be relegated automatically, as their first team are mathematically down from the first division as from this weekend. That reduces the other relegation places to three, and aware of this fact, the teams involved in the struggle to avoid the drop all got good results, except for Toledo, who are almost certainly down as well. They lost to relegation rivals Recreativo 0-2, who move up to 42 points, level with Logroñes who also won, beating Badajoz 2-0. Compostela faltered a bit, drawing 1-1 with Elche, and they are now only a point above Recreativo and Logroñes, with Getafe a point higher on 44. With four matches to go, even teams such as Badajoz, Elche (both on 48 points) and Eibar (on 47 points), could be dragged in if they don't get good results and the lower teams do.
