New manager Gustavo Benítez celebrated his return to Racing Santander with a late victory which takes them within a point of climbing out of the relegation zone. Benítez, who had left the club in the summer after failing to agree terms for a new contract, was asked to come back after Gregorio Manzano became the second manager to be fired this season at the club. He immediately made changes to the side, bringing in one of his favourites Espina and giving Magallanes a chance behind Mazzoni up front.

Zaragoza manager Luis Costa was looking for a way to end his team's bad away form, having failed to win in their last eleven outings. Rebosio came in for the suspended Pablo, and Juanele passed a late fitness test to return to the side. However it was business as usual as his team failed to show any initiative, and Espina was unlucky not to score when his shot hit the crossbar with a quarter of an hour gone. Racing took the lead though ten minutes later when the ever attentive Mazzoni followed up on Magallanes's free kick for his sixth goal since joining the club in winter. However the lead only lasted a few minutes before Esnaider beat Ceballos with another individualist goal, and the sides went in at the break all square.

Just after halftime Toro Acuña hit his second long range shot of the match, brushing a post with Ceballos beaten. With Zaragoza showing signs of life, Benítez replaced his front two around the hour mark, bringing on Regueiro and Preciado, and Regueiro hit the side netting shortly afterwards from a wide angle. With the game petering out to a draw a through ball by Tais found the Uruguayan forward inside the area, and he turned to shoot across Juanmi for the winning goal.It was Racing's fourth home win in a row, and keeps them in the fight to avoid relegation, with four teams at the moment separated by one point at the bottom. Zaragoza are now only six points above them in fourteenth place and they too could be pulled into the battle if they don't improve.
