Last season's cup winners Zaragoza were suffering a hangover from their midweek defeat in the Supercup, and they went down 2-1 to a depleted Espanyol side. With Roger, Iván Diaz and Munteanu all injured, Quique De Lucas was drafted in to the starting line up on the left hand side of midfield, and he take his chance opening the scoring early on with a well struck goal. Jamelli levelled the scores on the half hour mark after Mora's clearance hit him and went in to the net, but Spanish under 21 international Lopo headed the winner in the second half. Mexico's Palencia made his debut for the home side, with Alex Fernández shaking off an injury to come on after the break for his first appearance since returning to the club where he started his career.
