Patrick Kluivert saved the day for Barcelona with two well taken goals in their 1-2 victory over newly promoted Sevilla. Kluivert proved too quick for the Sevilla defence, who have yet to adapt to the speed of top flight football, and he took advantage of their hesitation to help his side to their first three points of the season. Olivera levelled the scores temporarily from the penalty spot just after the restart after Rochemback had held back David.

Barcelona manager Charly Rexach left Saviola on the bench until the second half, preferring Overmars to start the game, and he also brought in Luis Enrique as right wing back after his good recent performances. However after Sevilla equalised he rectified, putting on Puyol at the right back position and allowing Luis Enrique to come further forward. Sevilla's boss Caparrós including 17 year old Reyes in his starting line up, and the youngster showed some good touches before being replaced in the end by new signing Toedtli..
