Betis finally beat one of their bogey teams Espanyol 2-0 after losing five times in a row to them at the Ruiz de Lopera stadium in previous seasons. The Sevilla based side lined up with their two new signings from Benfica, Calado and Tomas, in the starting eleven, having narrowly lost their first game at Málaga. Espanyol were still missing two of their key players, Navas and Posse, who have been unable to play since the start of the season as their registration papers were not in order, the former for delays in confirmation of his passport and the latter for problems with the club who own 50% of his rights, Vélez Sarsfield. With Palencia returning from Mexico injured as well, Oscar moved up behind Tamudo with Soldevilla keeping his place in midfield alongside Alex.

Both goals came in the first half hour, the first from a Joaquín header after good work from Filipescu and the second from a Casas penalty after referee Puentes Leira ruled that David García had tripped him on the edge of the area. This was the third goal of the season for the Argentinian striker, making him the current Pichichi in the league. Denilson was on brilliant form creating havoc throughout the match, and could have added a third in the second half if Mora had not been attentive. Espanyol lost striker Tamudo through injury at half time and the transfer listed Manel was called upon to make an appearance in the second half.
