Celta moved ahead of their local rivals Deportivo to top the first division after their second 3-0 victory in a row, this time over Tenerife. Russian international Mostovoi returned to the side after a one match ban playing alongside Boban in a revolutionary 4-1-4-1 formation, and he proved once again to be the star of the match. Mostovoi scored twice, the first from a possible offside position running on to a long cross from Gustavo López, and the second from the penalty spot twenty minutes from the end after Jesuli had been brought down. Catanha opened the scoring, also from the penalty spot, after Pablo Paz held him back with half an hour of the game gone. He had to fight though to get the ball, regular penalty taker Gustavo López arguing with him before the Hispano-Brazilian striker took the ball and beat Sergio.

Víctor Fernández decided to go back to his regular formation at half time, deciding that his two star midfielders were getting in each other's way, and he replaced Boban with Giovanella. He needn't have worried though, as although Tenerife were showing some good touches they were not much of a threat. Karpin and Maurice came on for the last quart of the game and the Russian almost added to the scoreline. But three was enough, and Gallicia rule the roost once again, albeit at a very early stage in the season. Tenerife's manager Pepe Mel has some thinking to do, and seeing that his B team won 10-2 in the third division he may do worse than call on the reserves.
