Las Palmas and Athletic Bilbao shared the points in a match which the home side should have won but were thankful to draw in the end. The Canary Island side attacked right from the start, with Orlando setting the tone bringing a good save out of Lafuente in the first minute. Jupp Heynckes changed his formation for this match, bringing in a third defensive midfield player, but it did little to slow down the Las Palmas onslaught throughout the game. However it was the visitors who took the lead through Etxeberria at the end of the first half as Las Palmas were still claiming a penalty at the other end for a hard tackle on Orlando, leaving the local fans upset with referee Puentes Leira.

Bilbao had lost Julen Guerrero to an injury in the first half, and they were reduced to ten men in the second when Larrainzar was sent off rather harshly for a second bookable offence. Fernando Vázquez brought on three more forwards to join Orlando, and eventually they got their reward when Tevenet made it all square ten minutes from time in another controversial incident, Eloy appearing to handle in the build up to the goal. In the dying minutes Bilbao had an appeal for a penalty turned down when Angel seemed to get a hand to Etxeberria's shot, and Rubén struck the post at the other end with almost the last shot of the game.
