Deportivo held on to top spot with a narrow 1-0 victory over Sevilla. With eight players out injured and César suspended Irureta put out the best side he could, and several of his players looked tired after their victory at Manchester United midweek. Once again it was left to Diego Tristán to make the difference, and he got his fifth goal in eight days, turning in Amavisca's cross after Valerón had sent him away down the left wing. Both keepers were active in the first half, with Notario saving from Amavisca early on and Nuno, replacing the injured Molina, closing down Olivera when he got free in front of goal.

Caparrós threw on an extra forward at half time, but Nuno proved his inactivity since returning from Osasuna had not dulled his wits. Djalminha made his first appearance of the season in the second half and could have added to his team's lead with a free kick which brought a good save out of Notario, and the keeper also turned away another shot from substitute Scaloni near the end. Draws for Betis and Barcelona mean that Depor open up a three point gap at the top pending Sunday's games.
