Sergio Kresic took over from Bernd Krauss on the Mallorca bench and produced immediate results, his side doubling their goal tally for the season with a 3-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano. Kresic surprised everyone lining up with exactly the same starting eleven as Krauss used in his last match, although he was hoping to bring back Leo Franco in goal until the Argentine keeper aggravated his injury in the pre-match warm up. But this was a different Mallorca, and they scored their first goal of the season at the San Moix stadium only six minutes in, Novo firing a long shot through a crowded goalmouth after the Rayo defence cleared a corner.

Kresic lost Fernando Niño to an injury before the break, and with Cembranos and Peragón on the park Rayo started to look dangerous. However an active Luque finally got his first league goal of the season after Marcos played an excellent reverse pass through, and Paunovic rounded off their first home victory after intercepting a loose pass and charging through to beat Etxeberria. Rayo ended the day firmly rooted to the bottom of the table, and although they didn't look too bad, they happened to be once again in the wrong place on the wrong day. With that type of bad luck, Gregorio Manzano will have his work cut out to keep them up.
