Real Sociedad dropped back in to the bottom three after losing to relegation rivals Mallorca. Real manager John Toshack accused his players of overconfidence after three victories in a row, and they recklessly left gaps at the back in the last few minutes allowing Mallorca to win the game on a late counterattack. Both sides could have scored in an open first half, with Leo Franco saving well from a De Pedro header and Paunovic shooting wide with only the keeper to beat.

The visitors struck first when Campano bent a free kick around the defensive wall, but De Pedro levelled the scores with a decisive header on the near post from a corner. Then with Real pushing forward, Eto'o found Riera with a defence splitting pass, and the young substitute rounded Alberto before tucking the ball in to the back of the net. It was too late to react, and Real lose ground on their opponents, who climb out of the relegation spots to sixteenth. Referee Esquinas Torres pulled a muscle in his right leg and had to be replaced by fourth official Teixeira Veitienes for the last quarter of an hour.
