The home side dominated the game, but a superb performance by Ricardo in the opposite goal looked like spoiling their plans The Spanish international keeper made spectacular saves from Gancedo and Aloisi in the first half and stopped everything thrown at him. Valladolid's only reply came early on from Fernando, and they were not to trouble Unzué again until the final minutes of the game after they had fallen behind.

Ricardo continued his performance after the break, saving from Fernando and Rosado Both teams had penalty claims turned down by referee Fernández Marín, Osasuna for a push by Torres Gómez on Palacios and Valladolid when Tote was sandwiched by Contreras and Cruchaga. Lotina threw caution to the winds and brought on Sabino and Armentano, and it was Armentano who finally broke through, beating Ricardo at last with a well placed shot into the corner of the net. In the last minute the visitors were reduced to ten men when half time substitute Mario picked up a second yellow card, but by then it was all over and Valladolid drop out of the top half of the table down to twelfth place.
