Real Sociedad scraped a point at Las Palmas in the last game on Saturday to keep up their fight to avoid relegation. Manager John Toshack was unable to bring in his new signing Darko Kovacevic, the striker sadly having to return home to Yugoslavia following the sudden death of his brother, and he therefore lined up (except for the suspended Luiz Alberto) with the same side which beat Valladolid so convincingly in their last match. The absence of Kovacevic also meant that the transfer of Jankauskas to Benfica was delayed a week, and the Lithuanian striker came on in the second half to make his last appearance for the club. Las Palmas also came in to this game on a high after defeating local rivals Tenerife, and Fernando Vázquez named an unchanged side.

It was the visitors though who had the better of the first half, with Tayfun bringing a good save out of Nacho González and Khokhlov and De Pedro shooting just wide. Las Palmas improved after the break though, and only a good save by Westerveld kept out Josico on the hour mark. Referee González Vázquez turned down a penalty appeal for a foul on Josico later on, and Khokhlov hit the woodwork for the San Sebastian side after Jankauskas set him up. In the end though the keepers came out on top, Westerveld keeping his second clean sheet in a row since joining, and González moving to the top of the Zamora's table for the first time. Real's point took them temporarily out of the relegation zone, although victories for Tenerife and Osasuna the next day dropped them back down to nineteenth. Las Palmas are currently safe in mid-table.
