Málaga and Mallorca shared the points in match which both really needed to win, the locals to push for a first ever appearance in Europe and the visitors to avoid relegation. With the two clubs having common shareholders, there was some suggestion in the local press that the result could be agreed beforehand. That was strongly denied by both sides, and the proof was on the pitch, where the game was hard fought with scoring chances at either end. Eto'o was let off his one match ban on appeal, and he went close early on for the visitors, Roteta getting in in time to block his shot. Dely Valdés sent a shot into the side netting after rounding Leo Franco at the other end, and Zárate brought a good save out of the keeper before the break.

If anything Mallorca were on top, but Kresic decided to bring on Engonga with an hour gone to strengthen midfield. The veteran midifielder was lucky not to give away a penalty though when he brought down Litos in the area, and a few minutes later his brief appearance came to an end when referee Undiano Mallenco sent him off for a second bookable offence. With Darío Silva once again unfit, Peiró had been playing with Dely Valdés alone up front. However took advantage of the extra man to bring on an extra striker Canabal, although he proved a disappointment when he failed to react quick enough when free in front of goal.

Mallorca didn't give up though, and Contreras did well to tip a deflected effort by Ibagaza on to the bar. Campano also rattled the woodwork with a free kick, and the numbers were evened up when Fernando Sanz was forced to rugby tackle Luque as he advanced on goal. Eto'o missed a chance to steal a win near the end when he shot wide when two of his colleagues were better placed to score, but Musampa also could have won it for the home side if he had not shot weakly at Franco in the last minute. The point apiece leaves Málaga still in eighth place but now two points behind the UEFA spots, and takes Mallorca down a place to seventeenth, only one point above Osasuna.
