Intercontinental champions Real Madrid returned from Tokyo in excellent form, beating Mallorca 1-5 in the San Moix stadium to move up to sixth spot with a game in hand. There was no rest for the star players though, and only Hierro and Cambiasso were missing from the side which won the Toyota cup midweek. According to Spanish tradition, the home side applauded their opponents onto the pitch in front of a capacity crowd who were hoping to see their heroes extend their run of nine games without defeat.

Ronaldo had other ideas though, and with his new found confidence after his performance in Japan, he left the defence in tatters as he ran through to beat Leo Franco after Raúl touched on Figo's pass. Eto'o equalised though against his old side after Lozano laid back Riera's cross, and for a few minutes Mallorca could have gone in front if it had not been for a couple of good saves from Casillas. However Ronaldo added a second individualist goal just after the restart, and Raúl added another, turning in a Roberto Carlos cross. Mallorca were in disarray, and after Helguera's header from a corner three minutes later hit Novo, Raúl was there to scramble the ball over the line for his second of the night.

At last Del Bosque decided to give some of his players a rest, taking off Zidane, Ronaldo and Raúl thinking of Wednesday night's Champions league game with Lokomotiv. Mallorca frustrations were growing, and Pandiani got himself sent off tripping Figo when there was no danger. And to finish things off, two of the substitutes Morientes and Guti combined for the former to square the ball across goal for the latter to beat a shell-shocked Leo Franco. The result takes Madrid to within two points and one place of their opponents, both filling the UEFA cup positions in fifth and sixth positions respectively.
