A mistake by eccentric keeper Mono Burgos probably cost Atlético Madrid a victory at Sevilla. The ageing rock star had put in a magnificent performance in the first half, single-handedly preventing his side from going behind, in particular with spectacular saves from Reyes and twice from Toedtli. But then with his side in front in the second half, he allowed a soft shot from Fredi wide out on the left wing to creep under his body, catching the ball just too late as it rolled slowly over the line. The Atlético players claimed that it had not crossed over, but referee Carmona Méndez awarded the goal after agreeing with the linesman.

Atlético were missing the suspended Fernando Torres and José Marí, and other than a reaction save by the league's top keeper Notario from a long Correa shot they were totally dominated by a Sevilla side for whom Reyes was a constant danger. However four minutes in to the second half the visitors went in front, Javi Moreno reacting quicker than the defence to run forward and head Albertini's free kick past Notario.

Then came Fredi's goal and Sevilla were back in the game, but Burgos recovered to stop efforts from Fredi and Casquero, and substitute Antoñito shot wide when presented with an easy chance. The frustration got too much for Reyes, who picked up two yellow cards in quick succession, and his side had to settle for a point in the end which keeps them three points behind their opponents. Atlético stay seventh, but are now four points away from the UEFA spots after Celta's victory. The game though was about Burgos, and whether you love him or hate him, you have to say there is never a dull moment when he is around.
