Mallorca took over seventh place from Barcelona after a 1-2 victory in the Nou camp. It was another disappointing performance from the Catalans, who dominated the opening minutes but found themselves behind midway through the first half after Novo's shot was deflected past Víctor Valdés by Kluivert. The goal sank the locals, who were missing the suspended Puyol and De Boer in defence, and only some brave goalkeeping by Víctor Valdés kept out Eto'o.

Antic replaced Mendieta at the break to bring on Riquelme, but he shot over the bar when presented with a chance. A few minutes later Eto'o appeared to block a free kick from the Argentinian with his arm, but the referee waved play on, and at the other end Víctor had to save again from Ibagaza and Eto'o. With Leo Franco away at his mother's funeral, Miki was playing in the Mallorca goal, and he did well to block an effort from Saviola. But he could do nothing a few minutes later when Riquelme found Gabri, and Kluivert was there to finish off as the full back's effort was bouncing wide.

The home side at least seem to have saved a point, but Manzano brought on Carlos for the last few minutes, and the nippy striker raced on to a long ball out of defence from Ibagaza to hit the winner. Barça's frustrations were apparent as Gabri needlessly got himself sent off for a second bookable offence after kicking the ball away, and his side ended the day three points behind their opponents and four off the UEFA cup spots. The Intertoto cup looms.
