Alavés were beaten 3-1 by an Espanyol side who have gone twelve games without defeat, and the Vitoria based team appear to be on the way down. Aranguren's side started the day only five points behind their opponents, and got off to a confident start for the first quarter of an hour or so. But they were unable to wear down the local five man defence, and almost went behind when Fredson's free kick went just wide. A few minutes later Roger set up his brother Oscar for a shot at goal, but this time Dutruel was able to turn it aside.

Three minutes before the break though Espanyol went in front when Milosevic collected Fredson's through ball to beat the French keeper. Aranguren brought on Tomic and Ilie for the second half, but within sixteen seconds they had another setback when referee Megia Dávila ruled that Geli had fouled Roger in the area, and Milosevic got converted the resulting penalty.

Alavés got their own penalty though a quarter of an hour later when Soldevilla tripped Ilie, Megia turning down the home side's claims that the Romamian striker was in an offside position when he received the ball. Llorens scored from the spot and the visitors pushed forward for an equaliser. However substitute Turiel got himself sent off for a tackle from behind on Martín Posse, and Maxi put the result beyond doubt with a late headed goal.
