Villarreal managed a last minute draw at Espanyol despite putting out a side packed with reserve and youth team players. Benito Floro's side were one of only two (together with Barcelona) who had registered for the Intertototo cup, and the manager wanted to give some of his key players a rest to have them available for that competition, which starts already in July. His side theoretically still have to finish in the top eleven of the table though to qualify (unless the Federation waves the rule as they did last season), and they will probably need to beat Betis next week to do so.

The Catalans took the lead through Maxi, who ran on to Milosevic's pass to score midway through the first half. De Nigris equalised though soon after the break when Toni came out to challenge and crashed into his own defender, but substitute Velamazán restored the lead with his first goal of the season from a Morales cross. It appeared that the locals were heading for a victory when under 17 international Xisco Nadal got behind the defence to steer a set piece free kick into the net, thereby becoming the youngest player ever to score a goal in the first division.
