Athletic Bilbao kept themselves on track for the last UEFA spot and at the same time ended any hope Deportivo La Coruña had of winning the league title with a 3-2 victory in the San Mamés stadium. It was not as easy as it looked though, and the Basques threw away a two goal lead before Spanish international striker Urzaiz hit the winning goal twenty minutes from the end.

Jupp Heynckes' side appeared to be in control after Del Horno put them ahead with a long shot which Molina failed to reach, and then Yeste scoring a brilliant second close to half time. But Irureta brought on Scaloni and Luque early in the second half, and his team came back with two goals in three minutes, Capdevila taking a pass from Sergio to score the first and Sergio himself getting past the defence to make it all square immediately afterwards.

But in the end Urzaiz struck the winner to give his side the three points and keep them two points above Barcelona, the only team which can now deprive them of that European spot. Athletic still don't have it won yet though. They have to travel to Real Madrid next week, and even a draw might not be enough if Barcelona beat Celta, as the Catalans have a better head-to-head record against the Basques.
