Real Sociedad were knocked off the top spot after a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Celta, who themselves tied up a first ever place in the Champions League with this result. It was a disappointing night for the Basque side, who also lost striker Kovacevic to an injury in the first half which could keep him out of the last match of the season against Atlético Madrid. Even so Real still have a chance of the title, although they need to win that game next week and hope Real Madrid are held to a draw by Athletic Bilbao to do so.

Mostovoi was the hero of the night for the Gallicians in this match, scoring an early goal with a shot which took a deflection off Edu to wrong foot Westerveld, and then heading a second soon after the break from Edu's cross to put his side two up. Nihat gave the 8,500 travelling fans some hope after he turned in De Pedro's cross minutes later, but Mido restored the two goal cushion five minutes after that, rolling the ball past Westerveld after the keeper could only push away a cross in from Velasco.

Nihat did get another goal later on, heading down past Cavallero after De Paula hooked the ball back into the goalmouth, but this was too important for Celta to lose and Lotina ran down the clock in the dying minutes with substitutions and other time wasting tactics. The manager had achieved though what nobody else had done, and Celta will be lining up with all the big names in Europe's top competition next season.
