Second Division A - Day 12

An injury time goal from Congo saved a point for leaders Levante in their match at home to third placed Albacete on Sunday lunchtime. Duré gave the visitors the lead early in the first half with a powerful shot from the right of the area, but four minutes later Roa and Chota both misjudged a Limones cross and Jofre headed into an empty net. Albacete went back in front though after a mistake by Olías let in Parri, and with the game coming to an end Congo made it 2-2 to keep his side at the top of the table.

Zaragoza move up to second place after beating Terrassa 1-0. It was an eighth game without defeat for Paco Flores' side, and puts them in line for a return to the top flight at the first attempt after their surprise relegation last season. The visitors had not lost for 21 games before this one, and they started well with Lainez saving twice from Keko early on. However ex Spanish international defender Paco headed the home side into the lead from an Aragón free kick, and there was no further score. The visitors ended the game with ten men after Héctor picked up a second caution two minutes from the end.

Xerez dropped out of the top three after losing 2-1 at Racing Ferrol. Bernd Schuster's side were kept out by local keeper Bello Amigo in the first half, and took the lead just before the break from a spectacular shot from over 30 metres out by Pablo which nestled in the top corner of the net. Schuster brought on Deus and Mena, but it was the home side who went further in front when Pezzarossi took advantage of a defensive mix up to beat Mora. Mena pulled one back with an individualist goal ten minutes from the end, but Ferrol held on to move to within two points of their opponents.

Poli Ejido continued their march up the table after defeating Córdoba 0-1, and they are now only a point outside the promotion spots in fifth spot. A heavy downpour made conditions virtually unplayable, with the ball frequently sticking in pools of water on the Nuevo Arcángel pitch. Both keepers were in action in the first half, with Ejido's Kike saving from Pato and Marcos, and Jauregui stopping Patri at the other end. However a late goal from Luis Gil gave the visitors the three points, extending their unbeaten run to seven games in a row. Victories for the teams around them mean that Córdoba drop back into the relegation zone.

Murcia lost ground on the top spots after a 0-1 defeat at home to bottom club Leganés. The only goal of the match came from a controversial second half penalty after referee Pérez Izquierdo ruled incorrectly that Lasa had handled in the area. Television pictures appeared to confirm that the defender had controlled the ball with his chest, but Miguel Angel converted the kick to give Leganés new manager Enrique Martín a much needed victory. Earlier in the game Loreto had hit the post for the home side, and Tito struck the bar with another shot near the end as Murcia tried in vain for the equaliser. Both sides ended with ten men after Cuadrado and Gámiz picked up two bookings apiece near the end.

The victory of Leganés means that the two Asturian sides drop back to the bottom of the table, despite respective draws. Oviedo shared the points with Numancia in a match which ended 1-1, even though they were leading for much of the match. The visitors were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute when Jonathan brought down Rosu, but the keeper made up for his mistake saving Suffo's spot kick. Fifteen minutes later Oviedo had a penalty of their own when Geni was brought down by Cuéllar, and the young striker showed how it was done by scoring from the spot himself. Sarabia's side equalised late in the second half though, Miguel Angel Nuñez taking a return pass from Sergio Cruz to beat Jonathan. The intense rain made further creative play impossible, and both had to make do with a point which leaves Oviedo without a home win since last March and Numancia just a point above the drop zone.

Oviedo stay ahead of neighbours Sporting Gijon by virtue of more goals in favour, both having the same number of points and the same goal difference. Antonio Maceda's side drew 2-2 at Tenerife, coming from behind twice to save a point. The Canary Islanders took the lead around the half mark when Martí beat Valencia, and could have gone further ahead when two efforts from Paunovic were saved either side of half time. However Villa slid the ball into the net a few minutes later, and although Paunovic restored the lead on the hour mark, Villa was there again near the end to force the ball past Valerio and deprive Tenerife of victory.

Salamanca recorded their first home win since the end of April after coming from behind to beat Las Palmas 2-1. The Canary Islanders looked like they could be in line for their first away win in eleven months when a long Baiano free kick took a deflection off Aurelio to beat Stelea in the first half. Then just before the break Las Palmas were awarded a penalty when Roberto brought down Rubén, but Reggi put his kick wide. Salamanca had only scored once in the Helmántico stadium all season, but three minutes in to the second half they equalised when Aurelio headed home Zegarra's corner, and half an hour later Quique Martín got the winner with another header from a Tomás cross. The bad news for the home side though was the sending off of both central defenders Aurelio and Noguerol in injury time.

A Molist penalty was enough to give Badajoz a 0-1 victory at Getafe to maintain their steady climb up the table. Zé Tó wasted a good opportunity for the visitors before the break, but Javi Baraja brought down Molist in the penalty area midway through the second half which the forward converted himself. Baraja was shown the red card in the incident, and with one man short Getafe were unable to get back in the game. Badajoz also had a man sent off later on though, Mendoca picking up a second caution near the end. The visitors go above their rivals on the night up to ninth place. (24.11.02)

Elche kept up their eight month undefeated away record, beating Compostela 0-1. Serrano hit the bar for the visitors in the first minute and Corredoira almost squeezed a shot past Toni for the home side on the stroke of half time, but otherwise there was little action until twenty minutes from the end when Compostela captain Pinillos was sent off for a second bookable offence. Meca beat keeper Tito from the resulting free kick for the winning goal, their first victory in six games. The Gallicians stay in the bottom spots, and with the club still not having settled back debts with their players they could be in for a turbulent week.

Almería came from behind to beat Eibar 2-1 and move, for 24 hours at least, out of the relegation spots. After a dull first half, the visitors took the lead when Miguel beat Barbero following a corner. However a quarter of an hour later Juanlu equalised from close range, and three minutes from the end Bilic scored the winner. It was a turn of fortune for the home side, who had thrown away several games in the final minutes. (23.11.02)
