Second Division A - Day 24

Sporting Gijon and Xerez drew 1-1 in the only second division match to be played on Saturday evening. The visitors took the lead against the run of play after the break when Mena took advantage of a defensive mistake to score. However seven minutes later the Asturians equalised when visiting keeper Moso let Tasevski's weak shot under his body. The locals almost got the winner near the end when Segovia's shot was blocked by Rubiales, and Xerez star midfielder Dani Pendín was stretchered off near the end with what looked like a serious injury.

Murcia proved that their recent good form was not just a flash in the pan, returning to the top of the table with a convincing 2-0 win over erstwhile leaders Zaragoza on Sunday lunchtime. David Vidal's side took the lead as early as the second minute when Ismael followed up after Tito's free kick was blocked by the defence. The visitors didn't react, and David Karanka added a second on a quick breakaway four minutes in to the second half. It was a disappointing result for Paco Flores' side, and they could have even lost by more if the Murcia strikers had taken another three or four chances which fell to them later in the game.

The other midday kick off between Leganés and Elche ended in a 2-2 draw, a result which does not help either side in their respective objectives. Miguel Angel gave the Madrid based side the lead midway through the first half with a free kick which went in off Benja's head after hitting the bar, but Melgar equalised from the penalty spot five minutes later after Fede Bahón brought down Armentano. Miguel Angel put the home side back ahead, also from a penalty when Villa was fouled by Curro Montoya, but Raúl Ivars made it all square with a late header from Santamaría's cross.

A battle royal at the top of the second division, where one point separates four teams after the Sunday evening games. Levante move back up to second, level on points with Murcia, after beating Almería 2-1 thanks to a late goal from right back Iñaki Descarga. Amato had given the Valencia based side the lead from Ettien's cross ten minutes before half time, but their keeper Rafa had to save from Francisco at point blank range after the break, and Patri made it all square soon afterwards before Descarga hit the winner following Rivera's free kick to send the 10,000 crowd home happy.

Albacete dumped Zaragoza out of the promotion spots after beating Numancia 3-1, and they go third in a three-way points tie with Murcia and Levante. The visitors had gone nine games without defeat before this match, and they appeared to be on the way to making it ten when Carlos Roa surprisingly allowed Marini's weak long shot to enter his net. New boy Jandro equalised for the locals from Parera's pass just before the break, but Numancia went very close to restoring the lead when Jaime Molina's shot hit the post and Pablo cleared another effort off the line. But then Duré came on as substitute to score twice in the last quarter of an hour and win the game for his side.

The top four have opened up a five point gap on the chasing pack, which is led by Las Palmas who moved up to fifth after beating Compostela 0-3. The turning point of the match came two minutes after the restart when the locals had two men sent off, Fabiano with a straight red for a violent retaliation after a foul by Mario, and Adriano who was given a second yellow for protesting by referee Mensuro Miguel immediately afterwards. A few minutes later the visitors took the lead when Baiano's shot deflected in off Jesús, and Carmelo and Baiano himself added two more later in the game to send the Gallicians back down into the relegation zone.

Las Palmas' neighbours Tenerife are two points behind them, heading a group of four teams on 34 points after beating Getafe 1-0. It was a fourth straight win for Canary Island side under new manager David Amaral, although it took them a long time to break down the visitors' resilient defence. The only goal came with a quarter of an hour remaining on the clock, Getafe defender Rivas turning a hard low cross by Ayoze into his own net. Only then did Pepe Mel's side come forward, but Aragoneses had to be at his best to save efforts from Alberto and Estévez near the end.

Terrassa moved back up to seventh with a last minute 1-2 victory at Salamanca. It was an undeserved win by all accounts though, with the hosts doing most of the attacking and the Catalans just soaking up the pressure. The visitors took the lead though on the half hour mark with a dubious penalty after the referee ruled that Enguix had fouled Keko, the striker converting the kick himself. Salamanca equalised in the second half, Raúl Sánchez scoring for the third game in a row with a back-header, but with D'Alessandro pushing his men forward, Monty struck the winner on a quick breakaway.

Poli Ejido are just behind Terrassa on goal difference after beating struggling Badajoz 1-0. The locals took the lead in the eight minute with a Poschner penalty after Joyce Moreno intercepted Patri's pass with his hands, and should have scored again when Sabino hit the post later in the half. The match was played in blustery conditions, but Zurdo López's defensive line up failed to take advantage when the wind was in their favour, even when they had a man advantage after Cañas was sent off midway through the second half for a hard tackle. The Extremadurians also ended with ten men after Joyce Moreno picked up a second booking in the last minute, and they drop to next to bottom in the table.

Córdoba failed to record their fourth win in a row under Fernando Zambrano, but they moved out of the relegation spots for the first time in almost three months after drawing 0-0 with Eibar. As usual the Basques put up their defensive wall, but could have scored late in the first half when Garitano headed over. The Andalucians did their best after the break, and only two great saves from Moso stopped them from taking the lead. Eibar held on though for their sixth scoreless draw of the season, and they stay a point ahead of their opponents in sixteenth place.

Last week's two bottom sides Racing Ferrol and Oviedo ended up drawing 1-1, a result which did neither of them any good. The Gallicians had gone twelve games without a win, and they found themselves behind again on the stroke of half time when Losada scored an individualist goal. Things appeared to get worse when Rambier was sent off twenty minutes from the end, but an acrobatic shot from Uche three minutes later at least saved them a point to take them level with Córdoba, Compostela and Badajoz. Oviedo are still anchored to the bottom, three points adrift of the rest.
