Second Division A - Day 26

Levante went top for 24 hours at least after a 1-0 win over Terrassa on Saturday evening. It was a dull game though, with neither side getting the advantage in the first 45 minutes as both managers packed their midfields. The only chances in that time fell to the locals, with Jofre, Chota and Cristian all trying their luck in a brief spell of activity. Amato finally broke the ice though ten minutes in to the second half, getting on the end of a Limones cross to beat Maestro, and although Jofre and Chota both went close later on, they had to make do with another single goal victory to give them their fifth home win in a row.

Zaragoza move back up to the promotion spots thanks to a last minute goal from Galletti in a 1-2 victory over Racing Ferrol. Jamelli had given Paco Flores' side the lead shortly before the interval with virtually his team's first shot on target, but substitute Dutil levelled the scores after the break, tapping in a cross from Uche. Lainez saved well from Cuéllar and Dutil hit the bar before Galletti hit the winner. Both sides ended with ten men after Ramis and then Juanele were sent off for second bookable offences midway through the second half, and Ferrol drop further into the relegation zone having gone fourteen games without a win.

Fifth placed Tenerife's run of five wins in a row came to an end when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Almería. David Amaral's side found themselves behind in the fifth minute when Francisco converted a rigorous penalty by Aragoneses on Juan Jesús, and although Paunovic and Marioni both hit the woodwork, they were still trailing by the break. The visitors pulled more men back in the second half to defend the lead, but eventually the Canary Islanders saved a point somewhat fortunately when the ball entered the net off Alexis after Iván Ania's corner.

Las Palmas could only draw 0-0 at bottom club Oviedo on Sunday lunchtime and stay in sixth place in the table. Despite the result it was a lively game, with both sides creating several chances, in particular from Reggi and Pedro Vega for the visitors and Oli and Losada for the home team. Miguel Sánchez was in charge of the Asturians for the first time after Vicente was sacked during the week, and he made several changes to the starting line up. Even so his side were unable to record their second win of the season at the Tartiére stadium, and they stay a point adrift of Ferrol in last place.

Meanwhile Oviedo's neighbours Sporting Gijon moved up to seventh place pending the evening games after defeating Leganés 0-2. Ex Espanyol striker Manel was a nightmare for the local defence, and after going close on two or three occasions he eventually opened the scoring early in the second half after Raúl saved from Villa. Fede Bahón headed against the bar and Lawal hit a post with a free kick as the Madrid based side fought back, but Bahón was sent off after picking up a second yellow card, and Villa finished things off on a rapid counter-attack later on to ensure victory.

Things couldn't be closer in the second division, with a three-way tie at the top of the table and Zaragoza only two points behind in fourth spot. Last week's leaders Albacete drop to second, above Levante on goal difference, after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Xerez on Sunday evening. Visiting manager Bernd Schuster was in danger of losing his job after his side's slide down the table, and he put out a defensive line up to try and take something away from the match. The tactics worked, and his team were solid at the back except for one shaky moment late in the first half when Mora saved from Viaud and Delporte wasted the follow up. Local manager Ferrando made three changes early in the second half, but the pattern stayed the same and in the end a point each was a fair result. The draw ends Albacete's run of four wins in a row, and leaves the Andalucians in ninth place.

Murcia took advantage of Albacete's slip up to move back to the top of the table on goal difference with a 4-2 victory over Eibar. David Vidal's side raced into a three goal lead, with Maciel and David Karanka both heading past Basauri from Isach free kicks, and Ismael converting a penalty after Maciel fouled by Jorge Sánchez. Local keeper Reinke turned a Lediakhov corner into his own net though just after the hour mark, and Uriz gave the home side fans a fright with a second goal a few minutes later. However Karanka made sure with his second of the evening to leave the Basque side on the edge of the relegation zone, only just ahead of Badajoz on goal difference.

Poli Ejido moved up to seventh place, level on points with Tenerife and Las Palmas, after beating a depleted Elche 2-0. The visitors lined up with a makeshift defence, but they were found wanting when Rios came forward to head Tevenet's free kick past Aizkorreta with a quarter of an hour on the clock. Kike had to save from a Luque free kick to keep his side ahead at the break, but David Prats added a second goal three minutes after the restart, and Mazzoni could have made it three if his late strike had not been ruled out for a borderline offside.

Getafe squeezed in to the top half of the table after they beat struggling Compostela 1-3. The Madrid based side started strongly, with Vivar Dorado bringing a good save out of Oliver early on, and Craioveanu gave them the lead midway through the first half from Edgar's pass. The locals were left with ten men at the beginning of the second half when Adriano was shown a direct red card, and Vivar Dorado and Michel took advantage to add two more goals in the space of three minutes. Sequeiros headed one back soon afterwards, but the cash-strapped Gallicians ended the day deeper in the drop zone.

After last week's high scoring round of games, it was back to the score-less draws. There were four in all, including the match between Salamanca and Numancia, where Ronaldo was the special guest after subscribing to €30,000 of the home side's share capital increase. He must have been pretty bored though, and even his friend Cacá could do nothing to alter the scoreline. Both keepers only had a save or two to make, with Stelea keeping out Velasco's shot and Luis stopping an effort from Gañán in the second half.

No goals either at Córdoba, where a well ordered Badajoz defence helped their side gain a valuable point. Visiting keeper Baines was the star of the match, in particular stopping efforts from Serban and Moisés, and the visitors almost snatched a win near the end when Jauregui had to save from Mantecón in virtually their first shot at goal. Córdoba at least keep up their six game unbeaten run, and Badajoz move up a place to nineteenth, level now on points with Eibar.
