Second Division A - Day 28

Poli Ejido kept alive their hopes of promotion with a 1-0 win against Sporting Gijon on Saturday evening, and they move up to fifth in the table, four points behind Zaragoza pending their game on Sunday. The only goal of the game came four minutes before the break, David Prats taking advantage of slack play between Pulido and keeper Valencia to nip in and score. Up to that point the visitors had been on the defensive looking for the breakaway, but even though they came out in the second half, Kike was never really troubled in the local goal. Sporting's Tasevski was sent off two minutes from the end after picking up a second booking.

Las Palmas were held to a 0-0 draw at Getafe, and are gradually slipping away from the promotion spots. It was a game with very little creative football, the only real chances falling in the first half to Craioveanu, who shot straight at visiting keeper Bo Andersen with the goal at his mercy, and at the other end to Baiano, who tested Pindado with a well struck free kick. The Canary Islanders ended the game with ten men when Mario was sent off, and they drop a place to seventh in the table.

Bottom club Racing Ferrol made it sixteen games without a win after they lost 0-1 to relegation rivals Eibar, also on Saturday. The Gallicians had drafted in a motivator to try and instil some confidence in the players, but they didn't have a shot on goal until Chispa Delgado tried his luck five minutes before the break. The visitors went close in the second half through Fagoaga and Uranga before they were awarded a penalty when Ramis brought down Eneko Romo in the area, the veteran defender being shown a red card in the incident. Bello Amigo saved Garitano's spot kick, but two minutes later Romo headed home Lediakhov's corner to give his side a much needed win and take them out of the bottom four.

Levante held on to third spot despite being held to a 0-0 home draw by Numancia on Sunday lunchtime. The Valencia based side could not find the way past a solid defence for the first half hour of the game, but when they did get through later in the first half Mijatovic put his shot wide in front of goal and Amato saw his two efforts cleared off the line by the defence. The visitors should have scored themselves on the stroke of half time when Rosu failed to find the target with a header from Kome's cross, but the brief flurry of activity ended after the break and the two sides settled for a point. Levante dropped four points behind the joint leaders by the end of the weekend.

Zaragoza's match at Oviedo also kicked off at midday on Sunday, and their 0-2 victory takes them to within a point of Levante. All the talk before the game was whether Morientes would join Paco Flores' side in the summer if they were promoted, but it was a home grown youngster Cani who gave them the best possible start with a brilliant goal, taking a return pass from Espadas and beating three men before scoring. The Asturians had several chances to equalise, in particular through Oli, Fran and Idiakez, but in the last minute Galletti made it two on a quick breakaway to end Oviedo's four match unbeaten run and sink them further into the relegation zone. Zaragoza's win opens up a six point gap over fifth placed Poli Ejido, and it now looks like a four horse race for the three promotion spots.

Murcia held on to top spot with a 2-0 victory against Badajoz on Sunday evening. David Vidal's side were too good for the Extremadurians despite playing half the game with ten men, Pedro Lago getting himself sent off only a minute in to the second half. Murcia had dominated up to that point but had not been able to find the net, and the visitors must have thought that they had a great opportunity to move out of the relegation spots. However a quarter of an hour later Juanma scored past Baines, and with the game coming to a close Isach picked up Tito's pass to make it two.

Albacete kept up their push for promotion with a 2-0 win over Leganés, and they stay just behind Murcia on goal difference. The visitors set themselves up to defend right from the start, and the home side didn't get a look in until midway through the first half. They took the lead though when the league's top scorer Jesús Perera, returning to the side after an injury, made it seventeen for the season with a header from Delporte's cross. After that the roles were reversed, with Albacete defending until Leganés lost Oscar to a second yellow card. Jandro scored a second from the penalty spot after Alvaro was brought down, and Alvaro himself was sent off soon afterwards, also for a second booking.

Tenerife lost ground on the leaders when they were held to their sixteenth draw of the season, this time 1-1 by Terrassa, and they drop to sixth place. The Catalans surprised their rivals with a goal by Keko in the tenth minute, but half time substitute Kiko Ratón made it all square eleven minutes from the end. Both teams ended the game with ten men, Terrassa's Navas getting sent off shortly before Tenerife's goal and Edu Moya following him near the end, and the Canary Islanders felt hard done by when the referee turned down a last minute penalty.

Xerez are just behind Tenerife on goal difference after they drew by the same result at Salamanca. Cacá set up Roberto Fresnedoso for the first goal with a quarter of an hour gone, but the visitors equalised when Jesule got ahead of the defence to score following a free kick. Cacá and Enguix both hit the post before the break for the locals, but the Andalucians came back in the second half after half time substitute Calle hit the woodwork, and only good goalkeeping by Stelea saved a point for Jorge D'Alessandro's side.

Córdoba move a place above Salamanca on goal difference to thirteenth spot, heading a group of seven teams only separated by two points, after beating Elche 1-0. It took a great performance by keeper Jauregui though to keep the scores level early on, in particular with saves from Benja early on and Raúl Ivars in the last minute. But Serban set up Moisés for him to score against the run of play, and after that they held on to keep up their eight game undefeated record.

Almería drop into the relegation spots after they were beaten 4-1 by an improving Compostela. The Gallicians put aside their financial worries with probably their best performance of the season to move a point above their rivals. Sequeiros scored twice before the break, the first from Maikel's pass and the second a header from Juanito's cross. And in the second half they added two more from the penalty spot, Lima and Maikel converting their kicks after Sequeiros and then Maikel himself were brought down. Almería got one back late on when Sequeiros put through his own net under pressure from César.
