Second Division B - play-offs, day 4

Barcelona B kept up the pressure on leaders Cádiz with a 1-3 win at Universidad Las Palmas in their Friday evening group A match. The Catalans took the lead when Trashorras controlled a David Sánchez cross to score with just after half an hour gone, but the locals equalised soon after the break when captain Ojeda headed an Alexis free kick over Jorquera. The visitors brought on young striker Alonso and he made the difference, setting up Verdú ten minutes from the end to put his side back in front and then scoring himself two minutes later.

Algeciras beat Burgos 1-0, their third such result in four games, and are well on the way to winning group B. The Costa del Sol side have not played in the second division A for 20 years, but having topped the Southern region group this season they are favourites to go up. The only goal came ten minutes from the end when Ortíz converted a penalty after Jacob brought down Armada, taking the locals on to ten points. A draw next Saturday at home to Athletic B would be enough to see them up.

Group C leaders Real Unión put the champagne back on ice after they lost 1-0 to Málaga B. Several of the local side's youngsters have played in the first division this season, and their experience served them well as they recorded their second win in a row thanks to a goal four minutes from time by substitute Adam. The visitors still have the advantage in their group though, and with three wins already to their name could go up if they beat Gramanet next weekend.

Crowd trouble spoilt the group D game between Barakaldo and Castellón, where play had to be interrupted late on as fighting between rival fans spilled on to the pitch. The visitors won the match 1-3, and they top the table pending Ciudad de Murcia's game on Sunday. For the third time in the play-offs, the Basque side went ahead, Eleder opening the scoring on the quarter hour mark. But goals from Marcos and Quero turned the score around by half time, and Juanjo wrapped things up soon after the break. (13.06.03)

Cádiz moved back to the top of group A after a 2-1 victory over Logroñes on Saturday evening. Over 20,000 fans turned up to watch their side take the lead with a quarter of an hour on the clock, Palacios heading a cross from Suárez past Javi Fernández. However the visitors needed to win to have any option of going up, and they fought back to level the scores on the hour mark, Varela scoring in his own net. But a quarter of an hour later Pavoni found Sambruno for him to score the winners and keep his side two points ahead of Barça B.

Athletic Bilbao B kept alive their slim hopes of going up with a 2-1 win over Zamora in their group B game. It was a hard match, with an overzealous referee sending off three players after the break, starting with visiting keeper Jaime midway through the second half after he gave away a penalty. Alaña converted the kick to put the Basques in front, and even though Cuevas was sent off a few minutes later to even up the numbers, Solabarrieta scored a second goal soon afterwards. Ten minutes from the end Pedro Pascual pulled one back to set up a nailbiting finish in which the visitors ended with nine men after Curro Vacas was also shown a red card in injury time. (14.06.03)

Gramanet are still in with a chance of going up after they beat Lanzarote 1-3 on Sunday lunchtime. The Catalan side raced into a three goal lead within the first quarter of an hour, Javi Jiménez, Pons and Larios all taking advantage of poor defending to score. Fali headed one back on the half hour mark, but after that the visitors held on to take the three points. Gramanet now have a double-header against group C leaders Real Unión, needing a win and a draw to overtake them in the table.

There will be an exciting finish to group D after Cuidad de Murcia beat Pontevedra 1-2 to move level with Castellón on ten points. The two sides meet home and away in the last two games to decide the one promotion spot. The East coast side went into a two goal lead with strikes from Alexandre in the third minute and Fran Nogueira after the break, and Javi Rodríguez's goal three minutes from the end was no compensation for the Gallicians, who have to wait another year at least to go up.
