Goals:
1-0. 25. Baptista. Turned ball past keeper after Reyes curled cross in from left.

Sevilla's new signing Baptista showed why the papers have been raving about him recently. The young Brazilian midfielder (known as "The Beast") put in an excellent performance, having a goal disallowed for a positional offside of team mate Darío Silva in the first half, and then a few minutes later scoring what was to prove the only goal in their 1-0 win over Atlético Madrid. Baptista's performance outshone those of several others who had been in the spotlight in the last few days, including Darío himself, the two Spanish under 21 youngsters Torres and Reyes who were expected to be in the full international squad next week, Atlético's new boys Musampa, Rodrigo, Novo, the returning Simeone and Gregorio Manzano's latest signing Ibagaza, who started this game on the bench.

Manzano's plans were upset though early on when Sergi went off injured, leaving his back four unbalanced. Sevilla could have extended their lead either side of half time when Gallego and Baptista both tested Burgos, and at the other end Rodrigo should have done better when presented with a couple of chances. The introduction of Ibagaza improved things for the visitors, but his ex Mallorca team mate Novo was unable to take advantage when put through by "El Caño". Finally Luis Gil should have scored for the Andalucians late on, but he blasted his shot way up into the stands. Celebrations though at the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium, Sevilla's first win on an opening day in the first division for eleven years.
