Spain's two successful Intertoto cup sides played out a dull and at times hard scoreless draw. Having started the season some time before their opponents to play in this year's competition, the visitors were the more organized side. However they were only able to create a couple of half chances early on, and Manu should have opened the scoring when he failed to get on the end of a long cross.

The tackles were flying in hard and fast though, and Villarreal's Coloccini became the first player to be sent off this season when he picked up a second booking sonn after the break. Málaga's Valcarce followed him soon afterwards though for the same reason, and referee Muñiz Fernández produced no less than 14 yellow cards throughout the game.

Villarreal's new signing Riquelme (or Roman as he prefers to be called in his new life) had to watch the game from the bench, and the only ray of light in the match came from substitute Guayre, who left his markers for dead only to see his shot hit the post.
