The Condomina stadium was packed to see Murcia return to the top flight for the first time in fourteen years. However although they were the better side, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Racing Santander. Richi gave his side the best possible start with a goal in the ninth minute, firing home a shot from close range after Luis García played across Roteta's long pass. And the young striker should have scored a second a few minutes later after he was set up by Michel, but he drilled his shot straight at keeper Ricardo.

Just before the interval though Racing were awarded a rigorous free kick outside the area, and Javi Guerrero struck it home leaving Sánchez Broto with no chance. And Matabuena could have even put the visitors in front before the half time whistle, but he failed to convert Guerrero's cross. But Racing were happy with a point which keeps them up with the leaders, and sat back further in the second half to defend. Karanka came close with a shot on the turn, but Murcia didn't have the arms to break through. Not a bad start for Joaquín Peiró's side though, and they remain undefeated for now.
