Spain's two new Champions League sides Real Sociedad and Celta cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw. The Basques had dominated the first half against a Celta side who were playing their second game in three days and who put out a starting line up with seven changes, some forced such as the absence of Argentina's keeper Cavallero who was on international duty. But missing the injured Nihat they were unable to beat Pinto, even though the Turkish forward's replacement Lee Chun Soo had a couple of chances to do so in the first half hour.

Eventually though Real took the lead when Kovacevic got on the end of Karpin's cross to steer a header past Pinto near to half time. It looked as if they were on the way to a comfortable win, but Lotina brought on Jesuli and Milosevic in a double substitution early in the second half, and the winger found the foot of the Serbian striker for him to volley a shot past Westerveld and square off the opening goal of his fellow countryman. It was a second draw for both sides, who will be facing a much tougher program this year with European football on the horizon.
