Athletic Bilbao moved out of the bottom three with their first win and their first goals of the season against Mallorca. Athletic manager Ernesto Valverde brought in Urzaiz for his first start of the season against Mallorca, and he proved his worth with two headed goals shortly before half time. Before that though, both keepers had been in action, with Leo Franco saving well from Gurpegui and Tiko and Aranzubia blocking an Eto'o effort at point blank range. The Camerooni striker headed the resulting corner against the bar, and both sides had goals disallowed, Colsa for a borderline offside and Ezquerro for carrying the ball forward with his arm.

The action continued into the second half, with Eto'o shooting just wide and Leo Franco saving from Etxeberría and Del Horno. He could do nothing though when Etxeberría got free of his marker to head home Del Horno's cross for a third goal, and two minutes from the end he was forced to bring down substitute Arriaga as he advanced on goal. Referee Daudén Ibáñez had no doubts producing the red card and awarding a penalty, and with all three substitutions made, Samuel Eto'o put on the goalkeeper's jersey. Even Leo Franco would not have stopped Etxeberría's penalty kick though, and Bilbao finally had points on the board.
