Víctor Fernández returned to the Balaidos stadium and helped himself to three points against a Celta side who had one eye on their Tuesday night Champions League match. Home team manager Miguel Angel Lotina made six changes to his starting line up, leaving Mostovoi on the bench and bringing back Milosevic up front in place of the injured Catanha. But even so the opening minutes went in their favour, with Gustavo López forcing Contreras to tip a long shot over the bar early on. However eight minutes before half time Betis won a free kick some 30 to 35 yards out, and dead ball specialist Marcos Assunçao curled in a shot which went through the hands of the surprised Cavallero.

Lotina brought on Mostovoi early in the second half, but Víctor took off Palermo to add an extra midfielder. Both sides had scoring opportunities but were off target, Edu, struggling with an injury, heading over the bar and Jesuli shooting just wide for the locals and Fernando also heading over for the visitors. But with the game coming to an end Luccin brought down Ismael in the penalty area, and Fernando tucked home the resulting spot kick for a flattering victory.
