Athletic Bilbao came from behind to beat Sevilla 2-1 in the last match of the evening, and thereby move back up to the UEFA cup spots. With key players out, local manager Ernesto Valverde was forced to put together a makeshift defence, with midfielder Gurpegui coming back after a one match ban to partner Karanka in the centre of the back four and César drafted in at right back for the suspended Lacruz. But they were caught out with less than a minute on the clock when Gurpegui failed to clear a long cross, and Baptista took advantage to put the visitors ahead.

Urzaiz levelled the scores six minutes later though from Yeste's cross, and Yeste himself scored what was to be the winner later in the first half after taking a long return pass from Del Horno and beating Esteban from a wide angle. After that though there were some hard tackles from both sides as they fought for control of midfield, and referee Rubinos Pérez had shown six yellow cards by the break without being excessively hard.

The pace slowed down after the break, with a save by Esteban from Tiko and a couple of efforts wide of the mark from Darío Silva at the other end the only really efforts on goal. The fouls and the yellow cards continued though, and Athletic ended the game with ten men after Del Horno picked up a second booking near the end.
