Atlético Madrid moved back up to fourth spot after a 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao. All the goals came in the last twenty minutes of the game, with an inspired Ibagaza setting up the first for Fernando Torres to head his free kick in off the bar. Torres added a second from the penalty spot after Musampa was fouled by Luis Prieto, and Paunovic came on to replace Torres for the last few minutes and headed a third goal from Aguilera's cross.

The result could have been different though if Yeste had not blasted a first half penalty over the bar for the visitors after Gaspar had fouled Urzaiz in the area. At that time the Basques were controlling the game, and youngsters Arriaga and Jonan García had both wasted chances to put their side in front. It was then though that the much criticised Ibagaza finally started to show what he is capable of, and he could have made goals for Aguilera, Nano and Lequi if they had been able to convert the chances he created for them.
