John Toshack's return to Spain was marred when his new side Murcia lost 3-2 in a thrilling match at Racing Santander. The man who did the damage was Javi Guerrero, who scored a hat-trick which included the winning strike in the third minute of injury time after Jonathan set him up, just two minutes after substitute David Karanka had levelled the scores for the second time.

The locals had the better of the opening minutes, with Benayoun, Diego Mateo and Moratón all going close in the first half hour. Javi Guerrero put the Cantabrians in front when he turned Benayoun's wayward shot past Bonano, but Ricardo had to be at his best to save from Acciari and Esnaider equalised on the stroke of half time with his first goal in Spain in three years.

Alcaraz brought on Jonathan for Benayoun at the break, and Racing almost scored when Guerrero hit the bar from a first corner, and Bonano saved well from Afek after another corner soon afterwards. Guerrero put his side back in front from Morán's cross, and everything appeared to be going calmly before the two goal flourish at the end got the crowd on their feet.
