Espanyol's hopes of survival took a dive this weekend when they lost 0-1 at home to Racing Santander. The Catalans could have moved out of the bottom three and moved to within a point of their rivals had they won and Mallorca lost, but in the end both results went the other way and they found themselves six points away from safety at the end of the weekend.

Luis Fernández's side came into the game full of confidence after victories over Valencia and Celta, and Hadji shot just wide early on. Tamudo had a shot saved by Ricardo and put another effort over the bar before the break, and Racing were ineffective in front of a well organised defence, hardly entering their opponents half in the first 45 minutes.

But twelve minutes in to the second half Nafti headed the ball though to Morán who squeezed a shot between Lemmens and the near post from a wide angle. Domoraud came close to equalising when he headed a De la Peña free kick past the post, but otherwise the Cantabrians stood their ground, and Benayoun almost increased their lead in the dying minutes.
