Málaga moved up to eighth spot after winning their local derby game at Sevilla 0-1, their fifth victory in six games. Either side could have scored early on, Arnau saving from Carlitos and young debutant Puerta heading just over for the locals, and Leko breaking free at the other end but seeing his shot saved by Esteban.

Darío Silva was returning to his old side, and had chosen the occasion to announce to the press that he was taking them to court for money they still owed them. That upset the local crowd, and having picked up one booking and clearly in an agitated state, Caparrós replaced him with Antoñito at the break.

The new man did have a couple of chances later on, and Arnau saved well from Puerta before he was replaced by Gallardo. But the visiting defence held fast, and with just under a quarter of an hour to go Javi Navarro chopped down Insúa and Salva (himself an ex Sevilla player) fired home the resulting penalty. The defeat left Sevilla down in tenth position, level on points with their city rivals Betis and two behind their opponents.
