Lots of draws and few goals this weekend, with the match between Athletic Bilbao and struggling Celta ending scoreless. The home side were looking to pick up points to get back in the fight for the European spots after losing three of their last four games, and the visitors needed a win to stop their slide into oblivion after only picking up one point in the last six matches. The Galicians were under new management after Radomir Antic resigned midweek, and assistant coaches Moncho Carnero and Rafael Sáez had been given the reins to the end of the season. Between them they made six changes to the line up, leaving Milosevic, Mostovoi and Jesuli on the bench and giving Edu the striker's role.

It was a dull match though, with neither side really getting anywhere in the first half. The Basques took control though after the restart, and Cavallero was forced to make a couple of top class saves from headers by Urziaz, including a last minute effort which he somehow bundled away off the line. Referee Esquinas Torres turned down two penalty appeals from the home side, one by Berizzo on Urziaz and another by the returning Juanfran on Del Horno, and sent off local defender Karanka for a second bookable offence in the final minutes. But in the end both sides had to settle for a point, which is the best they could expect under the circumstances
