A set back for Espanyol, who failed to get out of the relegation spots after a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sevilla. A victory for the Catalans would have taken them above Mallorca pending their game on Sunday, but a hotly disputed goal from Antoñito early in the second half was enough to sink them. Luis Fernández put out a changed side, finding room for all three of his left backs, with De la Peña left on the bench at the start. Caparrós left out Darío Silva after another bust up with the argumentative striker, and his replacement Carlitos went close early on.

Baptista also put Lemmens to the test with a free kick and another shot either side of the break before half time substitute Darío Silva headed a long cross into the path of Antoñito for him to volley past the keeper from what appeared to be an offside position. Esteban had to save from Hadji and Jordi Cruyff headed against the bar as Luis Fernández's side tried to save a point late on. But it was not to be, and they could find themselves once again a few points adrift from safety. Sevilla close up on the UEFA spots, their bad run of three defeats in a row finally at an end.
