Athletic Bilbao and Albacete shared the points in a 1-1 draw thanks to two controversial penalties in the second half of the match. The locals were looking for a win to consolidate their position in the UEFA cup spots, but the visitors needed the points as well to ensure their place in the top flight next season. The game got off to a lively start, with Buades clearing off the line from Yeste and later on from Gurpegui, and Orbaiz stopping a header from David Sánchez from creeping inside the post following a corner at the other end.

The visitors took the lead though ten minutes in to the second half, referee Tristante Oliva ruling that Luis Prieto had fouled Fernando Navarro. Pacheco converted the kick, and the Manchegans could have increased their lead if their forwards had been more on target later on. But with two minutes to go Tristante awarded another dubious penalty when the ball hit Navarro on the hand as he fell, and Iraola stepped up to square the match.
