Athletic Bilbao made sure of one of the UEFA cup spots after they beat neighbours Osasuna 1-2 and rivals Atlético Madrid lost at home. Valverde's side came close to scoring early on when Josetxo charged down Elía's clearance, the keeper dashing back and just pushing the ball wide, and Ezquerro had a goal disallowed for a non existent offside later in the first half. Jonan García (twice), Tiko and Yeste also went close as the visitors dominated the first 45 minutes, although Valdo did hit the woodwork at the other end and Palacios (playing his last home game for the club before moving on) wasted another good chance before the interval.

Two minutes after the restart though Athletic took the lead when Yeste beat the keeper with a free kick, and substitute Urziaz headed a second goal just a couple of minutes after coming on. The locals fought back, Cuéllar and Gorka García both testing Aranzubia, but although Valdo did eventually score it was too late to influence the result. The Pamplona based side ended the day in eleventh place having lost their last five matches, but they have had a good season and Javier Aguirre will be staying on to try and do better next season. But this was Athletic's night, and the players and fans celebrated their return to Europe long into the night.
